- 12 - civil rights leader Medgar Evers is assassinated in his front yard by Ku Klux Klan member Byron de la Beckwith. He would not be convicted of his crime until 1994.

- 22 - President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Tex. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in later that evening.
- 24 - Kennedy's alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, is murdered by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby. It is the first homocide ever caught live on national television.
