Trivia
- The original choice for Effie White was Jenifer Lewis. Lewis was replaced by Jennifer Holliday when director Michael Bennett moved the show to Broadway, Lewis was replaced by Holliday.
- LaChanze, winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, understudied for the part of Deena Jones in the 1987 Broadway run.[1]
- David Alan Grier, Vanessa Bell and Phylicia Ayers-Allen were supporting players in the show's original Broadway run, which lasted over 1,500 shows in three and a half years.
