  • The original choice for Effie White was Jenifer Lewis. Lewis was replaced by Jennifer Holliday when director Michael Bennett moved the show to Broadway, Lewis was replaced by Holliday.
  • LaChanze, winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, understudied for the part of Deena Jones in the 1987 Broadway run.[1]
