Garrett Morris
From Harpo's Juke Joint
Garrett Morris was either born on January 25th or February 1st, 1937 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Morris was involved with music very early in his life. He was in his church choir, attended Julliard of Music, starred in musicals, and had a solo with the Harry Belafonte singers.
Morris also appeared in television shows and movies starting in the early 70s. Morris is more well known best as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. He showed his musical talent by singing classical music at least twice on the show. At least twice on SNL he sang classical music.
His most famous character on SNL was Chico Esquela, the Dominican baseball player. Chico spoke broken english. Since his english was not very well he responded always with: "Baseball... been berra berra good...to me." During the 70's,Morris starred in the cult film Cooley High as a teacher. During this time, Morris had developed a nasty cocaine habit. While filming SNL scenes in his later years, Morris allegedly freebased cocaine. Because of this he suffered from delusions as a result. While in rehearsals for SNL that Kirk Douglas hosted, he ran screaming onto the set, saying that there was an "invisible robot" on his shoulder who watched him constantly. He had to plead with them to get the robot off of his shoulder.
In 1994, he was shot in an apparent robbery attempt but went on to make a full recovery. This was shown in the episode of Martin when he had to sell the radio station to another station that played country- western music.
After his last show on Martin in 1994, he appeared on Hunter as well as other shows.
Morris currently still appears in films as of 2004.
