Harpo's Juke Joint (or "The Joint") was created in April 2006 by founder Jennifer Daniels. Its original intent was solely to be an online community to discuss black films and actors. It was later expanded to include television and theater, as well as musical producers of soundtracks. Later, a Wiki was added, and the forum became a supplement to the Wiki.

The name, Harpo's Juke Joint, was taken from the book/film The Color Purple.
