Harpo’s Juke Joint:FAQ
From Harpo's Juke Joint
- Why do you say "black" instead of "African-American"?
Because not all actors of African heritage are African-American. Gina Torres is Afro-Cuban. Madge Sinclair was Jamaican. Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier are Americans, but of Caribbean lineage. Idris Elba is of African heritage, born in London. To refer to these actors as African-American would be incorrect and disrespectful to their respective heritages.
- Why is the word "black" not capitalized?
Take that up with the AP Stylebook.
