Trivia

  • Jones was originally uncredited for what is arguably his most famous role: Darth Vader in Star Wars. He felt that he hadn't done enough work on the film to deserve a credit. Thirty years later, his name was added to the re-release.
  • In 1998, he was mistakenly reported dead; the actual death was James Earl Ray, the alleged assassin of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Similarly, Jones received a plaque with the inscribed name "James Earl Ray" - ironically, at a 2002 Dr. King tribute.[1]
  • Is a frequent guest voice on The Simpsons. Creator Matt Groening credits Jones with speaking what he considers the best single line in the show's 18-year run: as one-year-old Maggie Simpson in Treehouse of Horror V, he declares, "This is indeed a disturbing universe."
  • Should Jones ever win an Oscar, he would become only one of ten entertainers to ever receive an Oscar, a Tony, a Grammy and an Emmy, and only the 2nd black performer to do so. (Currently, only Whoopi Goldberg holds all four.) However, he is only one of three black actors to have won three of the four main entertainment awards. The others are Goldberg and Harry Belafonte, who is also lacking an Oscar.
