There are three movies, three video games nine animated short films (titled The Animatrix) and a slew of comics that make up the Matrix series, a science fiction series that has grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide in ticket sales alone. Matrix is noted for being one of the few films in the sci-fi genre to boast of a large minority cast; more than half the main cast was of African descent. Matrix also included two black marriages (Link/Zee and Cas/Dozer) as well as a rarely seen love triangle between three black characters: Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Cpt. Locke (Henry Lennix).
Zee (Nona Gaye) and her sister-in-law Cas (Gina Torres, standing) react to the sudden homecoming of Zee's husband, Link (Harold Perrineau). Cas is the widow of Zee's brother Dozer (Anthony Ray Parker), who was killed in the first Matrix film.
The original choice for Neo was Will Smith, who turned the role down.
It has been suggested that Zee and Link were named because of the Zelda video game series, where the hero is named Link and the princess is named Zelda. Nona Gaye has an aunt nicknamed Zee, short for Zeola. This was a coincidence, however, as the character was named before Gaye was cast. Nevertheless, Zee's given name in most Matrix fanfic is Zeola, as opposed to Zelda.
