The season 2 cast of In Living Color from left to right. Top: Kelly Coffield, Kim Wayans, Damon Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans. Bottom: T'keyah "Crystal" Keymah, Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier, Tommy Davidson, Shawn Wayans
Dubbed as the African-American version of Saturday Night Live, In Living Color was a 30-minute sketch comedy that would turn out some of Hollywood's most successful modern-day comedians. Keenen Ivory Wayans, the creator of ILC, took umbrage to the thought that ILC was the minority answer to SNL, likening his show to The Richard Pryor show instead.
Most of the ILC cast knew each other prior to casting; only Kelly Coffield and T'Keyah "Crystal" Keymah were unknowns
The children of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez were fans of Kim Wayans' character Laquita, who was a parody of addlebrained homemaker Lucy Ricardo in I Love Lucy. When a tribute was held to honor Ball in Los Angeles, the Arnez children invited Kim to attend.
Only four cast members survived the entire five season run: Jim Carrey, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, and T'Keyah "Crystal" Keymah.
Kelly Coffield's character Velma Muholland, was a black-and-white character in a colorized world. As a result, Coffield had to be shot completely dressed in and painted blue - even her gums.
ILC was well known for its music video parodies, but hardly any of them appear on any of the ILC DVD sets due to copyright and clearance issues.
